Chipslip Sauna Workshop Series 2023

Join us this summer and learn hands-on natural building!

 

The project will focus on a community sauna structure that will have woodchip-slip infill and a living roof. The sauna hearth will be made out of adobe brick and cob, and will feature a sealed earthen floor as well.

 

Students will have a fully immersive learning experience. The course will include instructional classroom time for each concept followed by directly applying the method on site. Each day includes meals that are healthy and locally produced. Camp accommodations on site, located 15 minutes outside of Nevada City. 

Workshop 1July 21st - 23rd

Infill Wall Systems

~Classroom: Understanding and assessing materials, wall components, natural lath substrates, removable and cast-in-place forms, soil/clay analysis, mixing methods.

~Hands-on: mixing chips with clay slip both manually and with mixer, infilling wall cavities.

Living Roof

~Classroom: Understanding layering system and each layer, proof detailing and drainage, appropriate and local plants

~Hands-on: Installing each layer, drainage and detailing, planting

Cob and Adobe

~Classroom: Materials, clay test, recipes & ratios, manual and motor mixing, adobe forms, walls and sculpting.

~Hands-on: make adobe bricks, use adobe bricks to build lower base of hearth, cob method for upper hearth.

Cost…. Earlybird $350 ($395 after June 15th)  or join for a day $150.  $655 for both workshops

Workshop 2 ~  Sept 1st - 3rd

Clay and Lime Plasters

~Classroom: Clay plaster ingredients, clay test, plaster recipes, Lime plasters and recipes, 3 coat systems: scratch, base, and finish coats.

~Hands-on: mix and apply an interior earthen plaster over various lath systems, and exterior lime coat over chipslip walls.

Earthen Floors

~Classroom: Understanding the layers of the natural floor system, materials, clay test, recipes & ratios,  vapor barriers, insulation, mixing and level pouring techniques, and finishes.

~Hands-on: installing finish earth floor layer 

Cost…. Earlybird $350 ($395 after  Aug 1st)  or join for a day $150.  $655 for both workshops
